* U-16 and U-18 are the same teams. No Portland in U-16, instead there is Providence. *

Notes : The USPHL is basically the new EJHL, run by the real power programs. The Elite league is the rest of the old EJHL teams with some other top junior programs mixed in. The Empire league is pretty cool because of the Florida teams. 8 of the 11 USPHL teams have a team in the Empire, a throwback to the old system when the Empire league was the top feeder for the EJ. The U-16 and U-18’s are the same, Portland is in one, the Providence Capitals are in the other.

The Empire gives Southern players exposure to Jr.B hockey. It’s a chance for them to be seen by Jr. A scouts (and prep scouts), it’s lots of travel and dedication, so you know off the bat that these kids have that. They play the Northern teams at showcases and play each other for other games. Keep in mind, there is pretty much no HS’s with hockey teams in the South, so this is basically the only option for those players. I think it’s great for the game, it’s so cool to see the growth. It probably traces back to the NHL expansion.
