2016 USA Hockey Nationals : Players to Watch

Championship Notes:

U-14 – Shattuck beats TI 6-0 – Mission beats NJ Colonials 6-4 … Little Ceasers beats Alaska 2-0 … Boston beats Pittsburgh 5-3 … Final 4 Shattuck over Mission and Boston over Little Ceasers …

The Boston Jr.Eagles will play Shattuck in the championship.

Early NCAA commits Robert Mastrosimone (Shattuck – BU) and Grant Silianoff (Shattuck – Notre Dame) lead the tournament in points along with Antonio Stranges (Little Ceaser’s) who is actually an 02′ playing up.

At the U-16 level Victory Honda and Shattuck will play for the championship. Victory Honda beat Yale 3-2 and Shattuck beat the Colorado Thunderbirds 4-0 to advance.

New York native Nolan Moyle (Victory Honda – MICHIGAN STATE) , Brock Caufield (Team Wisconsin – OHIO STATE) and Chase Danol (Victory Honda), who played a pair of games this season with Cedar Rapids (USHL) are the leading scorers in the tournament.

At the U-18 level the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite will play Culver Academy for the title. Culver beat the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies 4-1 to advance, Pittsburgh beat the NJ Avalanche 2-1.

Logan Stork (Pitt Penguins Elite), top 00′ who is 2-3 years younger than the competition here Oliver Wahlstrom (Shattuck – HARVARD) and Alaska native Nolan Walker (CulverALASKA-ANCHORAGE) are the leading scorers in the tournament.

Day 1 Notes : Two games stand out as “upsets”. Pittsburgh beat Mid-Fairfield 4-1 lead by 3 goals from Austen Swankler, a really talented forward who has USNTDP potential. Mid-Fairfield is a strong team, great win for Pittsburgh. Los Angeles over New Jersey was the other. LA’s played well lately, they had a great run to reach Nationals and they have strong goaltending. The Colonials are a great team, deep and talented at every position and they have a pair of elite 01’s in John Farinacci and Marshall Warren. They will have to bounce back against the Buffalo Jr. Sabres in what is essentially an elimination game on Day 2.

Shattuck St. Mary’s

This team has players from 11 states (7 from Minnesota). SSM is lead offensively by Notre Dame commit Grant Silianoff and Long Island native Robert Mastrosimone, two of the best 01’s in the US. Then there’s also defenseman Braden Doyle (Lynnfield,MA) who recently committed to Boston University. Sometimes you have to be reminded this is a bantam hockey team. Other standout players to watch are defensemen Cam York, an Anaheim, CA native and forward Niklas Norman. SSM comes into the tournament with a 46-5-3 record and only 2 of those losses were to American teams, a 4-3 shootout loss to Minnetonka and a 2-1 setback against Omaha.

Chicago Mission

Mission is the reigning High Performance Hockey League (HPHL) champion as well as Illinois State Champion (defeated Cole Caufield and Team Illinois). Luke Toporowski is the team’s offensive leader and lead the HPHL in points this year. He is joined by Owen Lindmark and John Johnson to form a formidable offense. On defense look out for Alex Vlasic (6’3-165). Goaltender Luke Greenwood is considered one of the best in the country for this age group.

New Jersey Colonials

New Jersey is the champion of the high-powered AYHL. The Colonials are led by John Farinacci, a top-tier 01’ who also plays for Delbarton. However, this group is far from being a one-trick pony. Defenseman Marshall Warren has already committed to Harvard.
